چکیده

We determine the wavefunctions of electrons bound to a positively charged mesoscopic metallic cluster covered by an insulating surface layer. The radius of the metal core and the thickness of the insulating surface layer are of the order of a couple ofångström. We study in particular the electromagnetic decay of externally located electrons into unoccupied internally located states which exhibits a resonance behaviour. This resonance structure has the consequence that the lifetime of the " mesoscopic atoms " may vary by up to 6 orders of magnitude depending on the values of the parameters (from sec to years).

Thermal quenching of electronic shells and channel competition in cluster fission.

Experimental and theoretical studies of fission of doubly charged Li, Na, and K clusters in the low-fissility regime reveal the strong influence of electronic shell effects on the fission products. The electronic entropy controls the quenching of the shell effects and the competition between magic-fragment channels, leading to a transition from favored channels of higher mass symmetry to the as...

Evidence of superatom electronic shells in ligand-stabilized aluminum clusters.

Ligand-stabilized aluminum clusters are investigated by density functional theory calculations. Analysis of Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals and projected density of states uncovers an electronic shell structure that adheres to the superatom complex model for ligand-stabilized aluminum clusters. In this current study, we explain how the superatom complex electron-counting rule is influenced by the ...

Nitrogen vacancies in InN: Vacancy clustering and metallic bonding from first principles

We perform first-principles density-functional theory calculations to investigate the structural and electronic properties and the formation energies of nitrogen vacancies in wurtzite InN. We report an extensive and systematic study of the favorable atomic and electronic configurations of up to six vacancies in large supercells. The isolated vacancy acts as a donor in a p-type material where th...

Monopole and electrically charged dust thin shells in general relativity: Classical and quantum comparison of hollow and atom-like configurations

We give a comparative description of monopole and electrically charged spherically symmetric dust thin shells. Herewith we consider two the most interesting configurations: hollow shell and shell, surrounding a body, having an opposite charge. The classification of shells in accordance with the types of black holes and wormholes is built. The theorems on the parameters of static shells are prov...

Hidden charge states in soft-x-ray laser-produced nanoplasmas revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy.

Highly charged ions are formed in the center of composite clusters by strong free-electron laser pulses and they emit fluorescence on a femtosecond time scale before competing recombination leads to neutralization of the nanoplasma core. In contrast to mass spectrometry that detects remnants of the interaction, fluorescence in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range provides fingerprints of tran...
